Beijing, 2006

Every koi is a number. Every number is a message.

I studied in Beijing in 2006, where artists once used koi as anti-authoritarian code under Mao, substituting fish for politically loaded numerals.

Twenty years later, I still encode a number into every piece I paint.

Nine numbers carry meaning. One I refuse to paint.

  1. Overcome obstacles

The lone fish swimming upstream. Perseverance against the current.

  2. Double happiness

Two koi together, partnership, harmony, the wedding charm.

  3. Stages of life

Past, present, future. Birth, transformation, legacy.

Twenty years, across the globe
